The Mexican Foodbanking Network is a civic society organization based in Mexico, that rescues surplus nutritious food and donates it to those in need, addressing food insecurity and preventing massive pollution in the country.
The project activity effectively avoids GHG emissions by diverting food and unsold goods from being disposed of in landfills or incinerators. These items, discarded due to aesthetic flaws, short expiration dates, or overstock, are instead rescued and either commercialized or donated through a network of social organizations. This not only prevents unnecessary waste but also provides valuable food assistance to communities in need.
High likelihood of additionality
BeZero Carbon has assigned credits issued by Mexico-based CSA 1399-0035 a ‘A’ BeZero Carbon Rating. This is based on the opinions and reasons expressed below, following their analysis of all available information. Carbon credits rated ‘A’ provide a high likelihood of achieving 1 tonne of CO₂e avoidance or removal. The ‘A’ rating reflects BeZero's view that credits issued by this project exhibit a high likelihood of additionality, due to the strained financial landscape faced by the food banks involved, and the lack of common practice around this form of food rescue in Mexico.
